Eligibility

By nomination only

Current students enrolled in an undergraduate or master’s Fine Arts degree program at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Simon Fraser University or University of British Columbia and FIne Arts alumni who graduated within the past three years from ECUAD, KPU, SFU or UBC

Nominators must be one or more of the following:

  • may be an individual or co-nominators who are professor(s) at ECUAD, KPU, SFU or UBC or a professional of same

  • Nominators may submit 2 to 4 nominations per Fine Art Program

  • Candidates may not self-nominate

Step 1

Nominees will be invited to submit a selection of artwork from their portfolio for review. All nominees are asked to complete the Application Form and submit a pdf of 5 to 10 artworks from their portfolios by May 9, 2022.

Step 2

Three artists will be shortlisted as finalists and provided a stipend to create a site-specific proposal for the window panels in the VGH Emergency Department Waiting Rooms and will be invited to participate in an exhibition at Trapp Projects. Finalists will be asked to include a brief statement (no more than 150 words) addressing the specific context within the hospital in which the art work will be situated as part of their proposal.

Step 3

A jury of arts professionals and hospital staff will select the winning entry and the artist will receive a $5,000 cash award. The winning artwork will be translated onto window film and installed in the Emergency Department Waiting Rooms at VGH. The two other finalists will be awarded a stipend of $500 for their proposals.

NOTE: a student or alumnus may not win the PENN IDEA Art Award more than once.

Applicants for the PENN IDEA Art Award must agree to all of the following:

  • I have read the CRITERIA + CONSIDERATIONS information below on the PENN IDEA Art Award as well as on the “About” page and have given this due consideration when submitting my application.

If my work is selected to receive the PENN IDEA Art Award:

  • I will retain intellectual property of my art work(s), but I will but I will grant a non-exclusive, perpetual license to reproduce images of my artwork to the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation where it will become part of their permanent collection.

  • Non-Exclusive Permissions: By entering this art competition, you are granting us a non-exclusive, perpetual license to reproduce images of your artwork on vinyl window film, on websites and in newsletters, and in the marketing of the art competition to the general public. Artworks will not be used for any other purpose than that which is stated here.

  • I agree to have my name and contact information released to the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation and the PENN IDEA Art Award donors.

  • I agree to have my name and artwork used to promote the PENN IDEA Art Award and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Art Collection in promotional materials, website, social media, etc.

  • I agree to allow my submitted artwork to be reproduced by the media to promote the PENN IDEA Art Award and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Art Collection.

  • I understand that if I do not agree to all of the above listed requirements, I forfeit the opportunity to win the PENN IDEA Art Award or have my work displayed.

  • I have carefully read the eligibility criteria and I meet these criteria.

CRITERIA + CONSIDERATIONS:

This year’s location is the VGH Emergency Waiting Rooms.

Audience and Environment

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Emergency Department team have responded to the changing environmental needs, enhancing safety for patients and staff. The team works tirelessly to care for those struggling with an illness or injury who are seeking answers, support, and relief.

Patients are cared for with the latest advances in medical technology at B.C.'s only Level 1 trauma centre, quaternary care centre and main referral site for the province. The VGH Emergency Department is a national leader in the field of Emergency Medicine, with staff actively engaged in research aimed at improving outcomes for all patients.

The ED Waiting Rooms can be a space of heighten stress. Inventive, uplifting, yet sensitive works are encouraged in creating a calming, immersive and inclusive environment.

The subject matter is open and artist are encouraged to be innovative in their concepts, reflecting on the context of the Emergency Department and the experience of waiting.

Please keep in mind given the critical state of many patients that images should not be challenging, confusing or disturbing.  They will not be considered for the IDEA Art Award.

  • Excessive use of the colour red is discouraged.

  • Obscene, provocative or otherwise questionable content will not be considered. The PENN IDEA Art Award Jury and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation retain sole discretion as to what constitutes inappropriate content.

  • Entries will be judged and selected based on creativity, beauty, impact and how the artwork will enliven and enrich the lives of patients, patients’ families and hospital staff.

Proposed Location

The proposed space is four central window panels in the main ED Waiting Room (measuring 60" h x 67.75" w each) and four window panels in the adjacent inner ED Waiting Room (1 window of 45.25" w x 67.75" h  + 3 window panels of 58.5" w x 67.75" h each). Artists may create the work in any medium which can be submitted as a digital file to be translated into vinyl window film. This can be one image that will carry across all four window panels or four consecutive images. High-resolution prints on frosted vinyl film will be applied to the street level windows, providing patients with privacy while introducing colour and luminosity into the waiting room.

WINNER

A jury of respected arts professionals and hospital staff will select the winning artwork for the PENN IDEA Art Award. 3 finalists will be notified of their selection for the final jury process.

Prizes

  • $5000 awarded to the winner with the selected artwork becoming part of the VGH & UBC Hospital Art Collection

 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In agreement with the terms outlined Criteria and Considerations, finalists must sign a Submission Agreement which must be completed and submitted with a jpeg of the artwork.

  • If the jury is unable to select an appropriate piece of artwork through the submissions received, the competition will be suspended until the following year, at which time another Call for Submissions will be distributed.

  • The PENN IDEA Art Award Jury and the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation reserve the right to disqualify any entrant if they have reason to believe the submission is not the original work of entrant or does not otherwise meet the contest rules. If a winner is disqualified an alternate winner will be selected using the same judging process/criteria described above. Alternate winners are subject to all requirements set forth in these Official Rules.

  • The PENN IDEA Art Award Jury and/or VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation are entitled to interpret these rules as needed and their decisions are final.
